About
Join Dr Sue Brunning and Dr Toby Capwell as they explore the weapons and armour of the warriors who march, ride and fight across the Bayeux Tapestry's famous embroidered scenes.
From swords, spears and axes to helmets, shields and mail armour, discover how these objects were made, used and understood in the Anglo-Saxon and Norman worlds.
Drawing on their combined expertise in medieval warfare, material culture and archaeological evidence, Brunning and Capwell examine what the Tapestry reveals about the realities of combat, the different types of warrior and the powerful symbolism attached to weapons in the 11th century. Together, they uncover surprising details hidden within the embroidery and consider what this extraordinary artwork reveals about the people who fought at the Battle of Hastings.
