About

She gave up her life for theirs, then betrayed them to feed them. 'Kabbarli: An Irishwoman In The Desert' is the true story of Daisy Bates, a one-woman-show coming to Etcetera Theatre on 20th, 21st and 23rd of August as part of Camden Fringe. Arriving in so-called Australia in 1883, Irish-Catholic Daisy O'Dwyer attempts to lie and cheat her way to a more prosperous life. She then takes a chance in journalism and while pursuing this, she learns of the devastation happening to the First Nations People. Living out her days in the desert, she feeds the starving, and nurses the sick. Her data on mob movements, cultural practices, languages and beliefs is unparalleled. But with little recognition and desperately needing an income, she turns to selling sensationalist news stories about the peoples she loves so dearly. This story reminds audiences that we can find home in the least likely places, while asking if we can sit with compassion in the grey areas of being human. Does history have to repeat itself? Or can history be our greatest reminder to do better?
