1994, the Camden Monitoring Project, 60 Hampstead Road. A group of volunteers, organising against the growing racist attacks.

When threat is daily, resistance becomes a daily task, but as the teenage Alima is thrown into a night at the Project with her Uncle Muhammed, it becomes clear that within the ordinary, live the extraordinary acts of care needed to hold a community together. 

When an attack looms, the phone begins to ring. One call becomes another. As the night deepens, Alima and Muhammad must navigate not only the weight of what they hear, but their own questions about responsibility, identity, and how to respond to injustice. There are choices no-one hopes to have to make.

Based on true stories from the real people of Camden, CAMDENWALLA gives voice to those who refused to stay silent. Intimate, urgent, and quietly powerful, the Camden Monitoring Project is once again activated in the very building it was born, as we continue to ask ourselves what we must do in the face of hatred, division and obstinate hope. Blending humour, humanity, and lived experience, CAMDENWALLA shines a light on a hidden history, and the people who made sure it was never forgotten.

We are creating a playful music ensemble of 4-5 women to become our PUBLIC-FACING relaxed 'BAND' and public speakers.

'Beginner Friendly & 'confidence building'

Join our Relaxed Friendly Audition & Introduction Session for Black disabled women aged 50+ inclusive of neurodivergence, chronic health conditions, caring roles and diverse access barriers.

Instruments provided.

Participants will:
• learn free
• develop ensemble songs
• develop 1 solo song
• join a 10-session Friday programme
• develop confidence in shining your light in photos & interviews

Discover the fascinating history of interactive printmaking with two expert speakers and create your very own interactive volvelle.
Have you ever seen a Renaissance pop-up book? Books and single-sheet prints with moving parts have been a part of the art of printmaking since its invention. This brief overview, 'Playing with Premodern Interactive Books', with Suzanne Karr Schmidt explores some of the most cleverly interactive European publications through several centuries, and demonstrates the experimental hands-on uses of dials, flaps and do-it-yourself printed scientific instrument kits.
Next join rare books and special collections librarian Katie Birkwood for The 'Mirror of the Cosmos': getting to grips with a volvelle'. Before the invention of GPS, online calendars, or even the humble wristwatch, there were devices that helped people to understand their time and place in the universe. A volvelle is a multi-layered rotating paper diagram, most commonly used to explain and illustrate the relationships between the heavens and the earth. In this interactive session, you'll get to assemble and explore your own replica volvelle while learning about its fascinating history.

A body of knowledge: summer lectures

Dr Alia Amir will be delivering an engaging and informative food talk, taking participants on a delectable journey through the rich culinary traditions of British South Asian communities. By highlighting the history and cultural significance of locally grown recipes, she aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the diverse flavours that have become an integral part of Camden and the region's gastronomic landscape. 

Alia will be joined in conversation by Dina Begum, author of Made in Bangladesh, and Saliha Khan, founder of condiment brand Third Culture Kat.  

Following the talk and in-conversation, the audience can sample some South Asian Flavours with food supplied by local restaurants. They can then walk down Drummond Street, soaking up the heritage of South Asian cuisine which made the street famous, including the original shop of world renowned Indian cooking paste and sauces brand Patak's, as well as famous long-standing food shops and restaurants such as Ambala confectionery (1965), Diwana Bhel Poori House (1971), Gupta's Sweets and Savouries (1979), Ravi Shankur Bhelpoori House (1982) and Chutney's (1982).
